"Sir!" The words came out and I caught myself... Did these guys even have genders?
My boots clamored over the street, skidding on loose rocks in the moist air. His/its/her long strides easily equaled 6 of my own - plus, the thing could step over any debris, overturned cars and similar civilian leftovers.
"Sir!" It had almost turned onto the next street by the time it heard me, stopping smoothly and rotating its massive featureless head in acknowledgement. I just caught up when words snapped in front of my face, flickering translucent across my visor.
I AM BUSY
The alien form hovered over me like a thin tree with too many leaves. I could hear the armor creaking under the wavering bulk, and as it stared calmly down at me - cold and unreadable – I felt very very small. They weren’t known for their understanding, and during my hesitation another message appeared.
CHECK AROUND THE CORNER
A long arm, punctuated by a gun the size of my torso, gestured in a slow gentle motion towards the intersection. One of the traffic lights had been deformed via microwave into a waning black ribbon. This stretch of street saw some expensive skirmishes, by the looks of the scorch marks and craters pock-marking the asphalt, but especially by the mound of bodies shoved into a shop window.
I checked.
“All clear!” I gave the thumbs up.
WHAT DO YOU WANT
“You forgot your change.”
And he didn't even care. Gosh.
-------------------------------------------
I've been adding more color lateley, even though it is more subtle. Hm?
/EDIT: of course I wasn't happy so I changed it.
Looks excellent, but I must ask, is this part of some ongoing storyline? After War of the Worlds, my taste for malevolent space invaders has dwindled, and the concept of an alien being that doesn't kill you on sight is nice departure from the norm. Whatever the case may be, the scenario is entertaining.
The stories all take place in the same universe, similar things will crop up i'm sure. I would love to explain the backstory or any of these (I assure you I did think it through, haha) but I find it better to let the mind fill in the blanks. Its more of an abstract take on narrative, but not on the actual writing form - so it sounds normal, but the structure doesn't follow conventions exactly. Anyhow I'm glad you liked it.
